Reading, The Maiwand Memorial c.1920

More about this scene
After World War I the base of the Maiwand Memorial with its fluted pilasters and stone swags was rebuilt in a harder limestone, for the name panels had eroded badly. The names are now on bronze panels set between pairs of rather more restrained pilasters, and George Simonds' colossal lion looks equally at home on his new plinth.
