More about this scene
The famous twin towers of the Norman church, built on the site of an earlier Saxon abbey and the centre of the Roman fortress of Regulbium, built around AD 280 by Carausius, were for many centuries a landmark for shipping in the Thames, and stand at the northern end of the Wantsum channel. But erosion of the coastline prompted the demolition with gunpowder of the church in 1809; the towers, known as the Two Sisters, were sold to Trinity House, who restored them as a navigational aid. The foundations of the fortress can be traced around the site from the King Ethelbert Inn.
