Rhyl, The Parade 1900

More about this scene
Backed by the tall 52-year-old buildings of the Esplanade, the Parade was Rhyl's only real attempt at elegant seaside architecture. The two-mile-long parade overlooks the sandy beach; at the west end an extensive area was laid out as winter gardens. A pavilion for concerts and other entertainments had been built in 1891 in the form of a Maltese cross. There were numerous hotels in the town, and two hydropathic establishments; 'there are several convalescent hospitals', says a contemporary gazetteer, adding rather ominously 'and a cemetery'.
