These attractive almshouses on Stydd Lane, complete with a well for their water, were built by John Shireburn in 1728 to house five Catholic spinsters or widows. To the left is the Catholic church of St Peter and St Paul, which was erected in 1789, and just along the lane is an older chapel, dedicated to St Saviour.
