Most of these shops had a long history. Spencer's the stationer's beyond Finkle Street sold postcards, perhaps including Frith's! Next is Haywood's, which until 1984 always displayed horse-racing memorabilia alongside the shoes in its window. Wallace's and Hodgson's were drapers, Whitell was a grocer, and Robert Spence an ironmonger. Only Tennet the grocer's, second from left, has continued, with several name changes; it is currently Ken Warne's.
