More about this scene
We are looking past John Carr's Green Bridge towards the magnificent castle - a true picture of medieval England. The castle was built from 1071 by Alan the Red as a defence station at the gateway to Swaledale. Although the castle has never experienced a siege, it has remained a military base, with barracks built inside the walls during the First World War to house conscientious objectors. The building at the far right of the castle is Scollard's Hall, built in 1080 and thought to be the oldest domestic building in England.
