To the right of Romsey's Corn Exchange, built in 1864, is a glimpse of Romsey Abbey, which until the mid 16th century was home to a Benedictine order of nuns. At the time of the Dissolution, the abbey was saved from destruc- tion by the people of Romsey who paid £100 for it.

I was at palmaston house 1977 6mnths it was not the best place remember Mr Hall went to abbey wells summer of 1977 than in 1984 mr Hall become oiffce in charge
I remember Mr. Beecham, a lovely teacher who took us for science - but look out if you misbehaved. I would watch fearfully as he dished out punishment. He would take you into a little side room he called his 'cupboard' and tan your behind with a big white plimsole. I was in palmerston house in 1962 ran away twice with some other kids caught by the police in a barn on a farm,they were not happy with me after searching all night
I was also at Palmerston House and I remember it well it was an old building and was once a Victorian boys home. I can't say I enjoyed my stay but it made me what I am today and appreciate things that kids of my age took for granted. But I do have a few good memories of my short stay there (around 6 months) and moved on to 5 more different homes until I finally found happiness at 49 Thorold Road, Southampton.
