Nostalgic memories of Rotherham's local history

Share your own memories of Rotherham and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

I have lots of memories of the High School, I was there from 1959 to 1966 and it would be great to hear from anyone who remembers me. My name then was Kathleen (Kath) Atkinson, though I am now Kate Condliffe. Looking at this website has set my memory going - it's amazing that I can remember things that happened over 50 years ago, but can't remember what I just came into the room to do! A few of the ...see more
I lived at Ecclesfield and I remember being taken to Cliton Park as a yearly treat aged 7. It must have been a Bank Holiday because the pool was full of kids and lots of parents sat around the edge on the steps. With it being round it was easy to get disorientated, it was scary when you looked up and your parents were not where you thought they should be. It was difficult to get ...see more
My maiden name is Lynda Roworth, and I have fond memories of attending Rotherham High School for Girls. I played hockey (right wing) for the school team - Christine Cutts was the first captain I remember. We rarely had school dances (I remember 2, attended by only 5 and 6 formers) - the boys from the Grammar School across town attended, and Miss Potts (the domestic science teacher patrolled the premises with ...see more
I attended Rotherham Tech, from 1953 to 1956, taking a London external degree in Engineering. I'm a little surprised at how little I can remember about the building and how hard it is to find information about the College for this era.
Many memories of Rotherham Girls High School, Dance Halls and Jazz Clubs from late 1950s. If you were there too, email me smp5449@live.com
I also remember the tree lined Lister Street. I have spent hours throwing sticks up the Horsechestnut tree in Lister street for chonkers. I used to cut thro' Brashers Alleyway (we were customers and allow too) from Gilberthorpe street on route for Clifton Park.. The sweets from brashers were the proceeds of money from the Pickle Factory in Lister Street for taking back old glass jars to be re-used. Steve Garner
I was a pupil at Rotherham Grammar School until 1948. My memories are of our form master 'Cabbage' Green, an ardent Labour Party member, and his use of the 'Flog Iron' which he used on all our form when we made a young female French teacher cry with frustration at our lack of discipline. Another memory is of a maths master whose name I forget, but he had false leg, the hero was the person who dared to stick a pin in the ...see more
I used to live in tree-lined Lister Street. All I had to do was climb over the back wall to the rear of my house to get into Clifton Park. I remember Sunday School held at the Bandstand: 'Sunshine Corner always jolly fine, is for children under 99, all are welcome and it's all free, Clifton Sunshine corner is the place for me!'. I can remember the kids play area, paddling pool and when the Remembrance gardens were ...see more
