More about this scene

Pronounced Rowell, the town quite possibly takes its name from an old Danish word meaning red well. By the Middle Ages it had became a thriving town of some importance. A market charter was granted by King John in 1204. The Market Hall in the town centre was designed by William Grumbald. Work began in 1577, but the building remained unfinished until 1895.

A Selection of Memories from Rothwell

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Rothwell

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I visited the Bluebell Inn and spent only a modest amount, however I left half a crown as a tip because of a very nice waitress. I left and had walked about two blocks, when the lady chased me down to thank me. I was quite surprised at this, but managed to remain calm and smiled graciously. Told her that if I came again to the Bluebell, I would surely look her up.
