More about this scene

With not an ancient building in sight, we would be forgiven for believing that this is the centre of one of Hertfordshire's 20th-century garden cities. Nothing could be further from the truth. Just out of sight to the left stands the ancient parish church of Royston, whilst behind the photographer is the original priory from which the gardens take their name. This quiet spot in the centre of this bustling market town is now covered with tennis courts, a children's playground and extensive rose gardens.

History Royston

I do not have any memories of Royston, I have been doing my family tree and find I have a few relatives from there, In 1871 my Great Great Great grandfather Whitaker lived there his son my great Great Grandfather married into another family named Proctor. Royston Army Camp.
Was posted to camp in 1954 and demobbed in 1957.Was called up for National service but the CO persuaded you to sign on as a regular and you got 28 days leave.Probably nowadays they would be Court Marshalled for suggesting that. Vividly remember the daily trips to Cambridge to work at the A vehicle depot which was to supply the Army with all types of vehicles and it was freezing cold laying on the floor of the ...see more

Father Stationed At Bassingbourn
My father was stationed at Bassingbourn 1942-1945. Mother was a nurse in England during WW2 and I was born in England in 1945. We lived in Royston at 14 Green Street. My mother and myself came to the US in 1947. I still have relatives in England (Stotfold, Henlow and Lincoln) and Scotland (Paisley and Dumfries). Mom and Dad were at Glenn Miller's last concert. They were on a first name basis and he called them everytime he was in Royston.

Raf Bassingbourn

I lived on the camp site for 5 years - my father was the link trainer for pilots there. I can remember going to the cinema there - smoking up the back - then realising my mum and sister were in there that same night !!!! I must have been about 12 at the time. Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
