Vandals had defeated two previous attempts to plant the Jubilee trees, but in 1886 money for 127 new trees — and for the guards to watch over them — was raised by public subscription. To the left, out of camera shot, lies Rugby School Lower School (Lawrence Sheriff School). The shops on the right had all been private houses only a few years earlier.
