Just to the left of All Saints' Church the Railway Bridge can be clearly seen standing where Queen Ethelfleda's castle was built to control and watch the Runcorn Gap and protect her kingdom of Mercia. The first church on this site is also said to have been founded by Ethelfleda at the same time, in AD915. That first church was dedicated to a Mercian prince called St Bertelin.
