Perfect Childhood Memories

A Memory of Rushton Spencer.

During the 40s I used to stay at the Fox Inn with my mum and dad, who were Gladys and Arthur Thomas. My name is Judy nee Thomas. The landlord and landlady were Mr and Mrs Ralphs. Their son and daughter in law and their 2 children David and Susan used to stay sometimes at the same time as we did. We had great fun in the fields across the road from the Fox, there was a stream with a wooden bridge over it, where we used to play. Happy days. There were only oil lamps in those days and an outside loo. I have such wonderful memories of the Fox.

Dear Judy,
We live in The Fox at Rushton James and we have recently cleared the bottom of our garden to reveal the stream you mention and also the wooden bridge which is still over it!
What lovely memories you have. When we came to buy the property 4 years ago, we had no idea of the pubs history, which has come to light whilst living here.
We had only been here for maybe a year, and a family arrived all dressed up with three generations in the car. They had come to find The Fox Inn for Sunday roast!
It was lovely to see and they spoke very fondly of the place to.
Regards, Emma.
I do have the best memories staying at the Fox. I remember they kept cows in a shippen attached to the Fox, I used to watch them being milked. And actually drank warm milk straight from the cows. I also remember one of the local farmers I think his name was Jess, he used to ride down on a very large cart horse without a saddle, and tether it up outside! It always seemed sunny and warm in those days, we played out in the fields from first thing until bedtime! Wonderful.
My time there was in the 40`s, would think from about 1948/49 onwards.
Sorry I forgot to say thank you for your message Emma, it was so lovely to hear about the stream and the little wooden bridge. I am sure you must find it so lovely living there. All the best Judy
