More about this scene
A fishing settlement existed here from early times, the town being burnt by French raiders during the reign of Richard II. In Victorian times Ryde was occupied, in the stern words of one commentator, by '...a suburban population of retired officers and other more or less moneyed idlers'. Henry Fielding, the 18th-century author of 'Tom Jones', called in at Ryde on his last journey to Lisbon. The novelist remarked on the beautiful setting of what was then just a straggling line of fishermen's cottages. Today's visitors still admire this attractive hillside town as they approach across the Solent.
