More about this scene
This cobbled street is one of the best known in this compact town, which preserves its medieval street plan almost intact. The three-gabled house on the right, Hartshorne House or the Old Hospital, 15th-century and 1576, was described in 1863 as 'an unsightly pile of wood and plaster too dilapidated to allow the lowest to find shelter beneath its roof'. By 1888 it had been carefully restored to its present state. This view gives a good idea of the quality of the town's houses and why it is so popular with tourists.
