More about this scene

Part of this building dates back to the 16th century. It was once three separate houses, Nos 8,10, and 12 High Street, so there are still three entrances onto the pavement. It became an hotel in the 1950s, when it was known as the Old House, and it later became the Saffron Hotel. The double-gabled house, No 6, beyond the hotel, is a 14th-century Essex hall house; it was the birthplace of George Stacey Gibson, the philanthropist.
