More about this scene
Built in 1154 by Henry de Essex on the edge of a valley, this lofty castle became the residence of the Archbishops of Canterbury. Here, on a dark night in 1170, four knights met with Randolph de Broc, the then tenant, to plan the murder of Thomas à Becket, and from here they set out the next day to accomplish their mission. The keep was restored as a country mansion in 1882, and subsequently became the home of art historian Sir Kenneth Clark.
