More about this scene
It is mid-afternoon in the quiet main street of Sandgate, with a single-decker tramcar passing by on its way to Folkestone. On the hill beyond stands a Martello tower and the fortifications of Shorncliffe Camp, whose construction was undertaken under Sir John Moore during the Napoleonic War. His work is commemorated in a memorial near the seashore, on the site of a house where he lived.
