Further south is the Foss Dyke. In the middle distance is the site of the old swing bridge, now replaced by the present 1937 bridge on the A57 bypass upon which the photographer is standing. The arch is that to the 1911 pipe bridge that carries Lincoln’s water from Nottinghamshire. The present footbridge is a Victorian one placed here in 1987.

Until the current concrete flood walls and steel piles that line the banks of the Fossdyke Canal were installed in the mid-1960s, this area of the village regularly flooded during the autumn and winter months.
Lots of fishermen from Sheffield would arrive by train during the season to take part in fishing matches staged on the Fossdyke. Fishing there as a boy, I recall the fishing being ...see more
My mother and her family, the Petits, were evacuees from Guernsey during World War 2. They were housed in Coates by Stow and then Saxilby. They attended Stow School. There were 8 children, Cyril, Donald,Olive, Mavis, Monica, Audrey, John and Mary. My mother, Monica, informs me that they were involved in putting on plays at the local hall and photos appeared in the local papers. Does anyone remember them and /or have photos?
