There used to be a 17th-century water mill by the pool, but it was demolished in 1962, soon after this photograph was taken.
Sited to take full advantage of the winds blowing off the Irish Sea, it was built as a corn mill in about 1805.
The view looks upstream to Low Moor Mill, which produced cotton cloth until it closed in the 1950s. Its site is now occupied by a housing development.
In the 18th century, fast flowing streams powered a variety of mills around the village, and many of its cottages date from this period, built to house an expanding work force.
