Various schemes had been proposed to bring fresh water to London; it was around 1600 that Edmund Colthurst identified the springs at Chadwell and Amwell as an ideal source.
All along the Thames, and described powerfully by Charles Dickens, houses, inns and tenements tottered and decayed in places such as Deptford, Wapping and Shadwell.
The town is situated on one of Norfolk's rare hills, and some early houses had wells dug 105ft deep to obtain water.
On the left is Shadwell Row: although greatly modified over the years, it incorporates two original houses dating from the late medieval period.
