The row of shops is still there, but Mellor's baker's shop (centre) is now a locksmiths; the shops with awnings outside are now a florist's and the offices of the TGWU.
Mellor Brook is the nearest village of any size in this well-wooded area.
The Capital and Counties Bank is still very much to the fore, while the premises of Mellor's jewellers shop are somewhat overshadowed next door.
The hills at the back are Mellor Knott and, to the left, Totridge Fell, along which the old border looped, climbing from the river to follow the watershed.
Straddling an unclassified road between Hayfield and Marple, the village of Mellor is noted for its church, which is dedicated to St Thomas.
Clark's of Retford next door have been replaced by Mellor's, a local butcher. R L Kisby and the Trustee Savings Bank (right) have gone, and Mills the newsagents have taken their place.
