In 1896 his lordship moved up the hill to Daws Hill House and the Abbey became a pioneering girls' public school.
The gates from the St Mary's Street entrance were re-erected on Daws Hill Lane at about the same time.
The pier has always been popular with fishermen, and catches of bass, bull huss, cod, conger, dab, dogfish, flounder, mullet, plaice, pouting and sole are common.
