Winding around the village is the Bridgewater Canal.
The longest canal tunnel in Scotland is on the Union Canal. It was built because the Forbes family did not want Callendar House to look onto a canal. The tunnel is 630 metres long.
The canal meets the River Gade at Heath Park, to the south of Marlowes.
The Royal Military Canal stretches parallel with the coast, hidden by the furthest trees in the middle distance. Note how little the seafront is built up at this time.

A canal to Tiverton once started from near French Weir.
The bridge was designed by William Cartwright, the canal’s civil engineer, who was also an optician in Preston and an inventor of some note.
