Racing boats are drawn up outside the establishment of Mr C Shore - an appropriate name that was much punned upon by his contemporaries.
Charlie Shore's Regatta Local waterman Charlie Shore founded the Boys and Girls Regatta in 1894.
Additional flank defences were constructed along the Solway shore as far as present-day Whitehaven. The presence of garrisons stimulated civilian settlement, agriculture and local industry.
This shore establish- ment gave its young recruits a stiff taste of discipline to fit them for their careers in the Navy.
