Anyway, October 1938, the time of the Munich crisis, was not a good time for people to go in for speculation.
This fine view shows the River Taw meandering down to the Long Bridge (just left of centre), and behind the bridge the dark wooded mound of the castle, built in the 10th century.
There is hardly a ripple on the water of the lake in Raphael Park, ideal for a spot of punting.
Then comes the Co-op shop, later converted into a shop for a travel agent and a small food shop.
