More about this scene
Tavistock is an ancient stannary town, renowned for its 10th-century Benedictine abbey. It was once the largest producer of tin in Europe. After this industry declined it turned to cloth. In the nineteenth century, copper took over - the Great Consols copper mine is nearby. Here we see a pleasing mixture of slate-hung and brick buildings.
