Salcombe was preserved from wholesale development because it was never reached by the railway. Kingsbridge, five miles to the north, was the closest the line ever penetrated. With only a small beach to boast of it never attracted hordes of holidaymakers. The 19th century church (right) is Holy Trinity.

Salcombe of the past.
Between 1060 and 1962 I worked with Les Stone, hiring his boats off White Strand. I think Les could be in the bottom corner of the photo with the hat on. I could be the young lad near the water's edge. What memories. Great two years for me.
