Gilbert White wrote in his diary, in September 1780, 'finished a Bostal or sloping path up the hanger from the foot of the zig-zag to the corner of the Wadden, in length 414 yards.' It gives an easier climb to the top of the Hanger, and it was a shorter route for Gilbert when he visited his friend Richard Yalden of Newton Valence.
