At around 7.00pm on the evening of 12 December 1940 Sheffield's air raid sirens sounded out their warning over the city. Within a few minutes the first bombs were falling; it was Sheffield's turn to be blitzed. Among the areas hit was the Moor, where many shops and buildings were destroyed or badly damaged, including the large stores belonging to Roberts Brothers and Atkinson's.
