There has been a castle at Sherborne for nearly a thousand years. King Stephen seized an earlier fortress in 1139, during the Anarchy. In Queen Elizabeth's reign the castle was leased to her favourite, Sir Walter Raleigh. Elizabeth's successor, James I, broke the lease and seized the castle after Raleigh's downfall.
