More about this scene

The railway reached the fishing hamlet of Sheringham ten years after it reached Cromer, Sheringham's close neighbour. Less disturbed by the outside world, the close-linked fishing community endured a little longer, and the inevitable development was more restrained. In this photograph the children are enjoying the delights of a typical English beach holiday. The cliff pathway in the distance is the start of a scenic walk to Cromer, some three miles away.

Grand Hotel Sheringham
I watched, with my young son, this wonderful Victorian building being demolished in 1974. Being such a huge Hotel, it became untenable. Part of it was, I recall made into flats, but after a time this apparently was not popular. So like The Sheringham Hotel, the inevitable was decided. Sheringham What A Welcome Place
I was a regular visitor when we were stationed at West. Beckham RAF Station. We would bike down that steep hill at Upper (it was murder going back!). I remember the theatre, the picture house, the crab sandwiches on the seafront, the rippling pebbles on the steep beach, the lifeboathouse, it even had a girl called Marigold, I had never heard that name before, she worked at one of the shops near ...see more

Over The Bump To Play Football
This photograph illustrates all too well the erosion of the cliffs. The profile of Beeston Bump seen in the background of this photograph compared with to day shows just how much land we have lost. Grand Hotel
I have just obtained a print of Sheringham promenade with a building on the left on top of a hill. I searched through these photos and came across the Grand Hotel - and that is the building in my picture. The date is 1890s. Does anyone know if this building still stands and if so is it still a hotel, or something else? Thank you.

Despite over 20 years’ work on the archive, these scans have still not been individually checked and may prove to be damaged, faded, or not of sufficient quality to ever be offered in our full product range. However, if you would particularly like to buy one of these please get in touch quoting the Frith negative number,(s) the town name and size of print you would like to buy. On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
