Shirebrook is a small town on the border with Nottinghamshire which grew up with, and was dominated by, the growth of the Shirebrook and Langwith collieries. Now they are closed, along with most other collieries in the north-east Derbyshire coalfield, the town has reverted to the kind of calm seen in this mid-50s view of the Main Street.

As a small child I used to visit my Gran & Grandad in Shirebrook - Annie & Seth Oakton. I'm told they lived in Byron Street and they had a grocery shop which was part of the front room in their house. Grandad also kept pigs on some land on the opposite side of the road. I remember living in Shirebrook Miners Welfare for years with my parents Mick and Joan and having some fantastic times. Everybody seemed to get on with each other and it had a real community feel. I remember trying to watch TV whilst hearing the sound of the brass band rehearsals coming through from the rooms next door.
