Alma Road Boys School

A Memory of Sidcup.

I too was at Alma Rd 1950 -54 then on to Bexley Lane until end of Dec; 55 I started in a B1 then dropped down to C1or2 my name is Melvyn nick name 'Boney' Of the teachers anyone remember
Stone he love to throw chalk and he'd run up when administering the slipper! and what about Cooksie
who was in his 70s and used to play for Millwall he took us for english and sport. most kids diddn't
have their own boots so one rarely found a good pair! to play in.I remember all those who are mentioned on the other posts. 'Strong-Man' Carter was a fair bloke but my confidence took a blow during gym when he told me "put those pipe cleaners away" during an arm exercise. He had been champion weight=lifter of Kent. Peg-Leg took us for english and RI he didn't hurt with the slipper but
his breath { Macbeth] was tragic!! Moss took PT and once in a while we had boxing which was the only thing iI seemed to be any good at in sport I did later join the Eltham &DistB.C.I remember the1st edition of the Eagle comic being given to everyone one day in 52 I lived in Halfway street and used to cycle to and from school. Kids names I recall ? Tooze ;Billy Hayes; ?Turvey; Gerry Selvidge; Micky Drew; Alan Poulton; Brian [rhymes with Tank] Harris; Kenny Norton; Who was the coal man's son who won the cross country race every sports day?
Roger Beasley; Slater; Sargent; Laben Ellis; It would be good to hear from or of any of those names.
On leaving school I went from office to River Thames ; M.N.;oil rigs; Markets; and lots in between.
I've lived in Aussie for many years.

I was at Alma Road in 1B in 1952; Daz Dawes was in my class. David Mason was a friend from 2A, I think. Can't remember the names of the teachers apart from Piggy Smith who tried to teach us gardening. Can picture some of it all. I moved on to Bexley Lane in 54 to 3A; Stongman Carter, Taffy Thomas, Bombhead Jones, PegLeg, and dear old Knacker Clark. Oh, and Jock Metcalf, the head. Tooze was a mate. Beasley was not! Turvey, Selvidge, Mickey Drew: their names ring my chimes. How about Woodruff and teddyboy Ferris, Bowker and Dennis? I left in 55 to Bromley Technical Institute, with Gordon Reeve, another mate.
I remember that teacher, Stone. He was my form master, I think. On special occasions he would administer the galosher instead of the plimsol, the sadistic bastard. He had various sticks on top of the blackboard too.
I remember all those names, and yours too. Beasley must have upset you at some point but I found him a good bloke and when he moved to near Ruxley corner I'd visit his huge canadian styled timber home. The last time I saw him he was driving
a lorry for his old mans haulage firm when he stopped for a chat in Halfway st; where I lived. Must have been '56-'57. Woodruff lived in Corbylands rd; he was in todays terms 'a geek' into radios 'cats whiskers'. Tooze was a fair artist , can't remember his teachers name who was mates with Stoney! I remember it being Dennis Bowker? What about girls! do you you remember Barbara Clarke; Avril Sexton ; Irene Gillett et al? I think David Mason lived in Willersley Av; had black hair? ginger for Reeve or perhaps I'm wrong? On a trip back to the U.K. in 2014 I went to look at the old school but due to bullshit regulations I couldn't get inside access
but it was much the same outside. I really must return to this 'site' more often to clean more information as to and who and where we've ended up! Cheers to any old chums. Mel.
