More about this scene
The Royal York (left) opened in 1810 as Sidmouth's first purpose-built hotel. The Duke of Kent, father of Queen Victoria, was an early visitor. His grandson, the Prince of Wales, later Edward VII, stayed here on a boyhood walking tour with his tutor. The building survives as the Royal York and Faulkner Hotel. The children here have obviously resisted the temptations of the ice cream on sale at the edge of the promenade.
