More about this scene
It was to this western corner of Sidmouth that the Duke of Kent brought his baby daughter Alexandrina Victoria in 1819. The impoverished duke died here in 1820, though not before he had taken the child in his arms to see the sea, telling locals 'one day she will be your queen'. Years later, Queen Victoria placed a window in the parish church as a memorial to her wayward but adored father.
