More about this scene
This is a quiet corner of Skelton on a narrow lane in the area called The Hills – we can clearly see the rural nature of the surrounding countryside. Looking at this view, it is hard to believe that many of the towns and villages of East Cleveland were industrially based, but indeed they were largely dependant on ironstone mining for almost a century between the 1850s and the 1950s. The earth mounds in the foreground may be relics of those activities, but the houses are modern.
