Work on the Leeds & Liverpool began in 1770. Not only did the coming of the canal vastly lower distribution costs for the industrial towns of Yorkshire, it also provided a localised transport service for the towns and cities through which it passed. Skipton was linked up in 1773 as part of the relatively simple first section, which needed no locks. The sections from Leeds to Gargrave and from Wigan to Liverpool followed by 1777. Then the funding ran out. For years progress was slow, but the missing stages were finally completed in 1816.
