I can never hear the song Sherry Baby without thinking of the Carlton times- it was the dance is over closing song - remember this?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3A9S79-gZs
It was a must in the 1960's. The Carlton was in the High Street near the post office, a few steps were at the front, leading to the entrance and it was always packed. They had a bar upstairs where you stood drinking looking down over the dance floor. Also there was a long row of seats behind an arch to sit and snog, if you wanted to. I was an apprentice at the Rheostatic Co (later Satchwell Controls) from 59 to 64 and I was the apprentice's entertainments organiser from around 60 to 63 and I organised quarterly dances at the Adelphi Ballroom; they were always sold out. Gordon Reece or Rees and the Adelphians were the band. They were good musicians but struggled early on to adapt to up tempo rock and roll tunes and for some time Moon River was up ...see more
Alot of these shops are gone, but the town really hasn't changed much as I still see it as it was.
