Always My Home.
A Memory of Snettisham.
My Mother Lavender was born at 39 Alma Road. She had a sister, Shirley and brother Alan. Mum married my Dad Peter Biggs from King's Lynn.
My Nana and Grandad were Lucy and Fred Tall, living at 39 Alma Road.
Molly and Ted Benstead had the bakery 4 houses up the road. As a kid I apparently spent alot of time in that bakery....probably why I love the smell of fresh bread, the warm smells always take me back there.
Hunts store was where we would spend our pocket money and if we were having a fish and chip dinner we would be sent up to Fred's. Tell him nana wants one of each so many times and ask him for scraps aswell, remember to say please and thank you.
Salvation Army was next to my Nans so we always passed it because the front door was never used.
I went to Sunday School at the Salvation Army Hall across the road.
We as a family had many weddings and sadly funerals also, up at the church.
I vaguely remember going to the primary school.
I remember being sent up to the Vic to tell Grandad, Dad and Uncle Charlie that dinner was ready.....they didn't always do as they were told.
I know we're related to the English family.
Dad being in the Army we were moved all over so holidays were spent back with Nana & Grandad. Everyone always knew who we were.
Great Granny Lizzie English, the Cockle Lady of Snettisham. Sadly I didn't know her that long but I still see her in my head and we have photos.
Aunt Hilda....she was ace.
Snettisham is Ace, you lucky people. I ended up in South humberside and I can tell you hand on heart....nowhere is as good as Snettisham. ❤️
Humernukes....I know I spelt the name wrong and I apologise. Connie was her first name, she was Mum's best friend. Connie and her family had the bungalow on the corner opposite the cow field.
Another smell that takes me back to Snettisham is coal fires....that's all we had back then.
My eldest sister lives in Heacham Carol Frary.
Our family was scattered all over so we never grew up with the same friends and I urge all parents out there not to pursue higher wages elsewhere.....your kids may suffer.
Always a child of Alma Road Snettisham. Sincerely Trevor Biggs
