Partly Remembering My Youth

A Memory of Southall.

I was born with my twin brother at 91 Greenland Cres. In November 1945. Following my fathers discharge from the RAF we moved to 197 Allenby Road. It was quite a nice location then and backed onto Jubilee Park. During my younger years I attended Lady Margaret junior school, followed by Dormers Wells secondary modern school.
At the age of 11 I joined the scouts that met at North Road School where I learnt to play the bugle/trumpet. When I reached the old age of 14 I joined 1846 Air Training Cadets that met at Featherstone Road School, I continued to play the bugle/trumpet. I was lucky enough to play the bugle on rememberence day at the memorial situated opposite the old Century cinema, by the Dominion, alongside me was warrant officer John Gillham.
I also headed the band as Drum a Major that led the Southall Carnival until it reached Southall Park.

I spent many a day by the Grand Union Canal, normally in the viscinity of Spikes Bridge Park.

I remember one time a fair arrived at the Greenford end of Allenby Road which we called the penny fair field, I don't remember it ever coming back.
There was a Fish and Chip shop next door but one to the Lord Allenby pub run by Glad and Albert, it was a sad day when they moved away. Next to the Fish and Chip shop was Meyers the Greengocers where my mother worked for a while. I also remember doing a paper round in the evenings for Martins News Agents, and having to borrow the managers bike to make the deliveries.

Allenby Road in those days was a fun place to live, there never seemed to be a dull day, we met a lot of people and made a lot of friends, to name a few. Brian Plumber, Peter Andrews, Kevin O' Connor. Kenny Hurren. One friend I was lucky enough to meet was my wife who at the time lived in North Road. We married in 1966 and are still together today. We moved away from Southall following our marriage.
