More about this scene
In 1891 the resident population of Southport was 32,191 and by 1901 it had grown to over 48,000. As can be seen in this picture, a large proportion of the audience is female. At this time Southport's male population was heavily outnumbered by females. There were two main reasons: firstly, given the social make-up of the town, many families employed female servants; secondly, there were a large number of female residents who lived off income from investments, many of whom also employed female servants.
