Grace Road Nursery And Montgomery Street School
A Memory of Sparkbrook.
I was born in White Road in 1951 and went first to the nursery at Grace Road, where I remember a climbing net which was outside on a frame of some kind. It seemed huge. We had little blue camp beds where we all had to have a nap after lunch.
From there I went to Montgomery Street and remember Mrs Askew and Mrs Gorniak. A clear memory I have, is of learning to write on a slate with a slate pencil. Once we had mastered the skills we were allowed proper pencils and paper. The teachers desk was high up. Mr Brazier gave us sweets from a big jar but I'm not sure why.
Everything seemed really big.
We moved away when I was 7 and I remember being expected to do long multiplication of pounds shillings and pence at my new school, but I had only done addition (of money) until then. I quickly learned though, so must have had a good start to build on.
When I was at College to become a teacher Mongomery Street and Grace Road nursery were the 'go to' schools for visits for the "Immigrant option" we could choose as Mr Brazier's reputation was much valued. Unfortunately I wasn't allowed to join the group for those visits as that wasn't one of my choices!
