War Time Evacuees
A Memory of St Agnes.
in 1944 we were taken to St Agnes, me, my two sisters and my mum. I was only 5 years old. They put us in the hotel Driftwood Spars, St Agnes. I went to school there, I can't remember the name of it. My mum worked in the pub in the village, as my dad was fighting the war. Loved every day we were there - came home from school then down to the beach. My sister Margaret was 9 years older than me and my sister Evelyn was 7 years older, but my sister Margaret and a local boy who lived in the village was smoking on the cliffs when they put a light to the heather. Next thing the fire engine arrived - I will never forget that. Then one day we were on the beach when a body came in the sea with a union jack on it. He was an unnamed - man never knew what happened to him. Some one said he was buried in the church in St Agnes. As both my sisters have passed, I would love to know the name of the school I went to and I would like to thank the people of St Agnes for the welcome we got from everyone. My niece went there about 6 weeks ago and she has left a photo of my sister in the Driftwood Spars and she has put a photo of me, my sisters and my mum in a gap in the rocks on the beach, so one day someone will find it. Well thats my little story ,thank you, Marie Sparkes
