More about this scene
A number of Stradling family members fought for King Charles I during the Civil War, including Sir Edward Stradling, who commanded a Welsh regiment at the Battle of Edgehill (23 October 1642), where he was captured. St Donat's was ordered to be slighted in 1646, but was restored by the family in 1660, when Grinling Gibbons was commissioned to supply carvings for the state rooms. The castle underwent further restoration in the 19th century.
