The South Foreland Lower Light 1898. Three hundred feet above the sea, this white-painted Victorian lighthouse housed a two-ton turntable operating the revolving light. It was built in 1843; for a further ninety years after this photograph was taken, it offered both a warning and guidance for ships passing north along the white cliffs, and for those heading for Dover harbour to the south, to avoid the Goodwin Sands.
