Fond Memories

A Memory of St Neots.

I was at Cedar House from 1963 to 1968 I was one of the girls to go onto the school in Rutland but for the life of me can't remember what it was called. I have very different views on Cedar House some very happy and fun others not so much. I remember Mrs Button, her big fur coats and her wigs, I remember being in the main house and being in the dorm next to her room. The sick room being next to the stairs that us girls used, the only time you were aloud to us the main front stair was on our frist day . I remember standing in her office in front of that electric fire which would burn our legs, having elecution lesson. Yes I remember Friz and her codliver oil being the remedy to all ills. I managed to get a bad rep as being one of the bad four that were always in trouble with Mrs Hutton, Fiona Patterson Sandra Niven Tokes Aldifferen and Hazel Tomlins anything that went wrong (including toilets blocking in Monkey vil) were put down to us. 😊

I taught at the school for part of two terms in 1964. It was an unrecognised school where most of the teachers had no qualifications. Mrs Hutton was a martinet; she had no qualifications.

I was gaining experience after my degree and before doing a PGCE. When I think about the school or recount my experience there, it seems as if I am inventing or exaggerating. The teachers were subjected to the same kind of disciplines as the pupils. We, however, did not have to perform unpaid cleaning duties. I left in disgust, feeling extremely sorry for the pupils and their parents who were being duped.
what was your name then? Ì remember Miss Glynn and Miss Petit cant recall any other names at the moment
i remember the sweet sop over the road from The school called Rpers and Saturdaý cinema in the town and the lovely Plums tea rooms where my grandmòther would take me on 3rd weekends.
I had no idea the teachers were so in experienced and am sure my parents had no idea. I left with good qualifications and then went to a secondary school in Essex where I was very shy having been at a girls o nly school!
I remember a teacher called Miss Pell and Mrs Bradley who taught PE.
I remember when Winston Churchill died we were all at dinner and Mrs Hutton told us to stand with bowed heads for 2 minute silence and the benches we sat on fell down when we stood up so we were told it was a disrespectful noise! Also I recall being in the TV room while she made us watch the black and white TV if the Aberfan disaster and 3 of us were upset and went outside and got told off for not watching it because we were young and it was upsetting so Mrs Hutton çalled us into the office told us off and made us watch it again that evening. Do you remember Gladys a tiny little lady who was the dogsbody in the kitchen? I remember having midnight feasts in top ďorm and Gladys caught us but didn't tell on us.
Sadly I fear a lot of memories have been deleted about Cedar House School from this site.
