More about this scene
Brierley`s hired out rowing boats, canoes and punts from their landing stage at the corner of the Ouse and Hen Brook. Their garden and tea-rooms were a popular meeting place for the young people of the town and for visitors. In 1895, St Neots announced the opening of its spa of refreshing and invigorating water emanating from a spring by the Paper Mill. `Neotia`, as the red-coloured water was called, was so foul-tasting that very few people bought it, and the venture failed. Mr Brierley, however, made a small fortune on the spa`s first day by providing, at a modest charge, suitably decorated river craft to form a procession along the River Ouse.
