My Mother's House
A Memory of Stacksteads.
I could not believe it when I discovered this photo of 1 Fernville Terrace as it belonged to my Mum's parents George & Marion Pickup. My sister and I spent every Christmas and Easter there when we were growing up. We travelled from Essex each time. We fondly remember climbing up the extreme (or so it seemed to us) hill at the back of the sloping garden and using tea trays to sledge back down again. Boy those hills are killers if you are unused to them. George Pickup used to be the owner of a local cardboard box factory which closed down when it was flooded. Mum married a local boy, Les Brearley from Stacksteads. The stories dad told us about his childhood totally unsupervised over the moors would make your toes curl, health & safety being what it is these days. The weather was always very cold and the surroundings very bleak. Sadly, we did not get to see the area in the summer months and how beautiful the countryside could be. Just remembered the Coconutters too, going down the street at Easter time!
Dad said his grandfather Lord Brearley (not a real Lord) was involved in the building of Brearley Street nearby.
Fond memories of the warmth and friendliness of people up North.
