On the eve of the 60s, the bicycle shop has gone and the car now reigns supreme in the square, which is signed as the A1. Coca Cola and snack bars have arrived too. Freeman Hardy & Willis have trendily abbreviated their name and put up new signage. On the architectural side, Pinney's the jewellers have replaced their more traditional building with a 1930s structure (left). The ornate gas lamp has gone. Today a wonderfully complicated tourist sign stands here, with arms pointing down each of the seven roads that leave the square.
